Ángeles Guardianes

For Day of the Dead 2020, The Consulate General of Mexico and the Mexican Cultural Institute / ESPACIO MÉXICO organized an intercultural event which combined tradition and new media art. Responding to the pandemic context and debates about cultural inclusion, the altar’s relevance as a unifying event was amplified and dedicated to the guardian angels who embody hope and resilience beyond the borders between Life and Death.  Artists Martín Rodríguez, Mariza Rosales Argonza, Francisco Fonseca and Omar Bernal came together to create a participatory ofrenda / installation inspired by the tradition of Mexican ofrendas. The altar is a discourse that transcends cultural and temporal borders to highlight the plurality and permanence of the ancestral voices, present in the ritual of the feast of the dead.

The artistic approaches of these four creators present extensive reflections on the disciplinary limits between the plastic arts, crafts and digital art. This work evokes notions of miscegenation or intangible heritage that have passed through the collective memory until today through intercultural exchanges, in a context of globalization.

The exhibition presented a multimedia installation made up of unpublished works that mobilize different media such as digital installation, crafts and performance. The virtual offering integrated a participatory durational broadcast featuring sound narratives and personal stories dedicated to the guardian angels of the community.
